With big growth across all demographics (six in ten online adults have accounts) Instagram is essential for venues, especially those with fantastic decor, views and serving top notch food and drink.

While adverts are increasing in the platform, users are mostly not forced to see or engage with content they don’t want to, meaning they’re only paying attention to accounts they’re really interested in. This means one thing – you can build really powerful relationships there.

1. Leverage influencer marketing

Instagrammers pay attention to those they’re following. Want to reach more potential customers? Searching Instagram for popular users nearby and offering them a fee in exchange for a post on their Insta feed can be a powerful way to get your message across.

The more followers an ‘influencer’ has the more you can expect to pay. We think micro influencers are where it’s at – they’re often more listened to than bigger ones – approach key local people and encourage them to talk about your venue next time they visit – offer them a free drink or meal.

2. Set the tone

Instagram is a wonderful place to show off your venue’s style and culture.

60% of the top brands on Instagram use a consistent filter, and that’s no mistake – knowing who you are as a brand and sticking to a theme gives customers an insight what they can expect when they visit.

3. Tell your story

Just like Snapchat, and now also Facebook, Instagram stories is a fantastic feature.

Stories are a rolling 24 hour series of images and videos which can also be highlighted locally. This means those not following you yet can also see them.

This is another great place for showing of your venue’s culture – are you seeing a theme here yet? They say a picture says a thousand words, that’s why Instagram, and stories in particular, is such a great place for showing what you’re all about.

 

4. Be discovered

Stories is good for this – if you add a location ‘sticker’ your post could appear in the local geographically based story. Anyone, even those not following you, can see this story and ‘discover’ you.

There are others ways to be discovered too – leveraging hashtags is a good one. Use popular ones (#FoodPorn, #MondayMotivation, #DogsOfInstagram) and local ones (#DailyBrighton, #BrightonBeach, #BrightonandHove), or/and create your own. They’re great for people to discover you and for you to ‘trend hack’ – you can use up to 30, much more than Twitter.

5. Get networking

Using Direct Messaging for business to business introductions is an interesting way for you to make new connections reaching people you may not have been able to before.

Depending on settings the other person may need to ‘Approve’ your message to enter into a conversation, but what is really interesting is you will know if they have seen your message or not. Much like Facebook Messenger, it will tell you if it has been read.
