Launched eleven years ago this month Twitter quickly became an essential tool for many businesses, marketers and their customers.

But is it dying?

In recent years there’s been a lot of talk about not keeping up with the competition, decreasing usage and a weak ad offering compared to Facebook.

Last year we saw Twitter begin to take notice. To help audiences understand their unique selling point they began to try to re-establish their position through research into the global perceptions of their brand.

In their blog ‘See What’s Happening’ they concluded:

“The majority of people who use Twitter the most told us it’s the best and fastest way to see what’s happening.”

Twitter is the place we go to for news, for up to the minute commentary on the events of the day, and to seek support from top brands.

With that in mind they’ve continued to make improvements in an effort to appeal to new users and make it more useful for current ones.

It’s become one of the go-to places for customer support and contact. It’s the only platform you’ll find all of the other platforms using too – and customers expect that. Google even has a deal with Twitter, indexing tweets to ensure they appear in searches – normally if you search for a company you’ll find their Twitter account is near the top of the search results.

Its main issue? Noise! There’s just so much going on, almost too much.

And if you think it’s easy to build brand rep and engagement in Twitter you’re wrong! You can’t be passive there, you have to stand out from the crowd and get involved.

So, while it has its problems it isn’t a platform you can ignore. We still love it, and have found it crucial for building our network and ultimately our business, so no it’s not quite dead yet.

Here’s some ways you can make it work for you…

  • It’s great for networking – get involved in local chat hours – #BrightonHour
  • Set expectations – either use a pinned tweet or your bio to let followers know the times you’ll be replying to tweets
  • Be responsive – don’t ignore your followers
  • Use graphics, images and emoji to make your tweets stand out in the noise
  • Use lists to segment those you’re following make sense of the noise
